The Masai Mara National Reserve, located in the southwest of Kenya, covers an expansive area of 1,510 square kilometers and offers breathtaking vistas, abundant wildlife and endless plains. A visit to the Masai Mara National Reserve provides an opportunity to witness the incredible Great Migration, where more than two million wildebeest, zebras and other antelopes roam the area throughout the year.
It’s a spectacle that attracts wildlife enthusiasts from around the world. Additionally, the thriving population of leopards, elusive black rhinos and the presence of hippopotamuses and crocodiles in the Mara River make it an ideal destination for wildlife enthusiasts. With over 450 bird species, the Masai Mara National Reserve also appeals to birdwatchers, adding another layer of biodiversity to this remarkable ecosystem.
Lake Nakuru National Park is one of Kenya’s premier wildlife experiences, particularly famous for its rhino sanctuary, rare Rothschild’s giraffes, and birdlife. Located approximately 160 km (3 hours) from Nairobi, it is a highly accessible destination.
Safari Highlights
Scenic Transit:
The journey from Nairobi begins with a 5–6 hour drive including a stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint for panoramic photos of the escarpment. Fly-in options from Wilson Airport reduce travel time to just 45 minutes. On the the third travel to famous birds paradise for a chance to witness the millions of flamingos that flock Lake Nakuru; also rhinos are easy to spot in this park.
Intensive Game Drives:
A standard 4-day tour includes three game drives.
Afternoon Drive (Day 1):
Focuses on spotting large grazers like giraffes and zebras as they remain active before dusk.
Full Day Game Drives (Day 2):
Starting around 6:00 AM, this is the best time to witness predators like lions and cheetahs on a hunt before they retreat into the shade.
Optional Activities (Day 3):
Undertake optional activities which include Masai village visit, balloon safari or a guided Masai walk. All this activities are at an extra cost.
Half Day game drives (Day 4):
Embark on five hour game drive after breakfast where your will encounter the prolific birds including millions of flamingos and other wildlife.
Mara River Observation:
Our safari include a visit to the Mara River, home to large populations of hippos and Nile crocodiles and bird watching at Lake Nakuru National park.
Optional Activities
Masai Cultural Visit:
An encounter at a traditional Masai village (manyatta) to learn about their pastoral lifestyle, traditions, and crafts. This typically costs an additional $25.
Hot Air Balloon Safari:
A pre-dawn flight over the savannah followed by a champagne bush breakfast. This luxury add-on starts at approximately $480.
